Meeting of 2007-01/04
MONSON CEMETERY COMMISSION
THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, 2007

The regular meeting of the Monson Cemetery Commissioners convened at 3:30 p.m. in the office at 32 Wilbraham Road. In attendance were Albert Wilcox, David Martin, Paul Lovell and Gaylin Bingle. Robert Pease did not attend this meeting. William Plante was also present.

Mr. Wilcox made a motion to accept the meeting minutes of December 7, 2006. Mr. Martin seconded the motion.

OLD BUSINESS:

1.      Discussion on Perpetual Care Account – Paul said he called five places and received three quotes for the new riding mower and gave them to Ms. Mahar as requested so the bill could be processed.

NEW BUSINESS:

1.      Budget – Mr. Martin asked Paul about the salary for seasonal help in the budget since he can’t take funds from the Gifts and Bequest Account to help fund this position. Paul said he would put in for more money as he always does and hopes he gets more money to cover the salary. Mr. Martin said he would inquire about the employee pool and what the funds in the land account could be used for. Paul will also ask for funds to take down four more trees.

The repair of the fence at Main Street Cemetery was also discussed. Paul said the
gate needs to be raised as well as repairing the fence. He has someone who could
repair the fence but needs to speak with Dennis Swierad again as Mr. Swierad
feels the fence is historical. Paul said he would try to contact Mr. Swierad again.

Paul said he is working on a five-year plan. Paul said the plan will include a new
truck, the expansion of the back field in Hillcrest Cemetery by having someone
survey and install grid markers along with the construction of new roads and the
installation of water lines along with the re-jointing of stone walls in Hillside
Cemetery. Paul said the five-year plan would also include an addition on the
building in Hillcrest Cemetery for additional storage. The Commissioners agreed
they would like to see the Capital list prior to submitting it.

2.      Brush – Mr. Wilcox said he would like to see the Cemetery borrow the Highway wood chipper again to get rid of the brush pile, but wanted the machine checked out thoroughly prior to returning it as Paul said there is too much brush to burn. Mr. Martin said he could speak with Fire Chief Harris to see if it would be possible to borrow the Fire Department brush truck as it would be good fire practice as well and this has been done in the past. Mr. Wilcox agreed it would be good training for the Fire Department. Paul said he won’t burn without snow on the ground as he feels this is a safer practice. Mr. Martin made a motion to borrow the wood chipper if it is felt that it is needed and to ask Mr. Morrell at that time for instructions for the proper use and the condition he would like it returned in and to have Mr. Morrell inspect the chipper upon its return. Mr. Wilcox seconded the motion.

3.      Vaill Lot – Paul said he would like to meet with the Commissioners in Hillside Cemetery regarding the Vaill lot so he could explain the lot to them. There are two graves left in the middle of the lot. One grave has a large monument on it. Forty inches minimum is needed per grave for a burial and the family has two people who wish to be interred in the lot. With the monument taking up one grave there is only one grave available for a burial. Paul said the monument could be moved at the owners expense to the west end as a baby is buried on the east end. The monument can’t be moved to the top as there is a sidewalk and a curb around the outside. Paul said they could also move the monument, use the grave and place the monument back on the grave, but wanted to make sure they would stick to the agreement following the burial.

Mr. Wilcox made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 5:05 p.m. Mr. Martin seconded the motion.

Respectfully Submitted,

Gaylin Bingle
